Using neurobehavioral probes and pioneering longitudinal designs, Monica Luciana is making transformative contributions to the understanding of adolescent development. Her theoretical and empirical work has advanced understanding of mechanisms of change, providing novel insights about adolescent risk-taking and how the developing brain is impacted by substance use. This work educates parents and teachers, guides public health prevention efforts, informs legislation regarding legal drinking and driving ages, and presents practical dilemmas for juvenile justice.
