Casey Johnson's research aims to improve diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic approaches for musculoskeletal disorders that are associated with long-term pain and disability. His lab conducts comparative animal and human studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to better understand and evaluate ischemic and degenerative joint disorders, with benefit to both human and veterinary medicine. Dr. Johnson collaborates with clinicians and research scientists across the Health Sciences to accomplish this interdisciplinary work.

Justin Grinage studies racism in education. His research focuses on how curriculum and teaching can engender or limit anti-racism, including how popular anti-racist books have largely been unsuccessful in producing racial justice after the murder of George Floyd; how black youth heal from racial trauma amidst police violence; how white youth develop their anti-racism; and how K-12 teachers can have more effective classroom race dialogues. Dr.

Kathryn Fixen is a microbiologist whose research addresses outstanding questions about how biology controls electron transfer. Dr. Fixen studies biological electron transfer to gain insight into how living systems can be harnessed for a sustainable bioeconomy. Her work has impacted understanding of how bacteria generate, partition, and use reducing equivalents, and her interdisciplinary approach has allowed her to study electron transfer from the organismal to the molecular level.

David DeLiema is an educational researcher who studies the conversations, designs, and processes that shape how learning emerges from moments of impasse. In research-practice partnerships that foreground the knowledge and voices of teachers, students, and parents, his research examines cognitive and psychological processes in the context of social interaction, technology-rich settings, play-based activities, and embodied movement.

Michelle Calabrese develops new polymer materials and complex fluids to address global challenges in healthcare, sustainability, and separations. To do so, her group takes advantage of the unique properties of nano- and micro-structured fluids. For example, they design innovative routes for noninvasive therapeutic delivery by leveraging the temperature-responsive properties of polymers, and create cost-competitive solution processing methods to make high-performance electrodes and biomass materials.

Cynthia Bradley is a leading researcher in simulation science, dedicated to preparing nurses to deliver safe, high-quality care in increasingly complex healthcare environments. She develops and evaluates immersive technologies that enhance realism in simulation-based learning,creating consistent, replicable experiences while reducing reliance on limited clinical placements. Dr. Bradley designs training models and psychometrically tests new instruments, used globally to assess instructor and learner outcomes.

Nick Arnosti studies how to give things away. Many important resources — such as organs from deceased donors, subsidized housing, and visas — are not sold to the highest bidder, but rather allocated using waiting lists, priority systems, and lotteries. Dr Arnosti’s work analyzes existing policies, and offers guidance on how to improve them.

Urban form, the physical structure of cities that influences daily life and city dynamics, faces sustainability challenges in the 21st century. How will these complex built environments adapt? As an architect and urban designer, Dingliang Yang integrates spatial research and design practice to develop innovative solutions across three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social, and cultural. He experiments with new urban forms by constructing urban spaces that address the sustainability needs of future cities.
